In Pune, the New Year and Makar Sankranti celebrations often see a surge in kite flying, leading to widespread use of hazardous nylon manja. Despite being banned by the courts due to its dangers, illegal sales of nylon manja continue, causing serious injuries to pedestrians and posing threats to birds caught in its threads. Acting on directives from Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar, police have launched a citywide crackdown on nylon manja sellers.

Key Actions Taken:

  1. Sahakarnagar Police Station: Seized 30 reels of nylon manja worth ₹18,000 from Rahul Shyam Kamble (19).
  2. Chatushrungi Police Station: Confiscated 12 reels valued at ₹14,200 from Iliyas Samim Sheikh (42).
  3. Vishrantwadi Police Station: Recovered two reels worth ₹1,720 from Mayur Mahadev Anarse (34).
  4. Warje Malwadi Police Station: Seized one reel valued at ₹500 from Siddharth Santosh Wakhare (19).
  5. Market Yard Police Station: Confiscated three reels worth ₹2,400 from Dhananjay Chandrakant Mohol (26).

Total Action Summary:

  • Number of cases: 5
  • Accused arrested: 5
  • Nylon manja seized: Valued at ₹36,820

This operation was carried out under the guidance of Commissioner Amitesh Kumar, Joint Commissioner Ranjankumar Sharma, Additional Commissioner (Crime) Shailesh Balkawade, and Deputy Commissioner (Crime) Nikhil Pingale, with active involvement from officers of local police stations and the Crime Branch.

The crackdown reflects Pune Police’s commitment to ensuring public safety and wildlife protection during festivities, urging citizens to comply with the law and celebrate responsibly.
