Pune: In a groundbreaking move, the state public health department has initiated a crackdown on 12 private hospitals in Pune for violating various medical acts.

Popular hospitals from Pune have been served notices for violating various rules. Dr. RB Pawar, Deputy Director of Health Services (DDHS) of the Maharashtra public health department, expressed concern over the failure of local health departments to address these violations, prompting state intervention.

This marks the first time such stringent action has been taken against healthcare establishments in the city. Violations under the Bombay Nursing Home (BNH) Act, the Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) Act, and the Biomedical Waste (BMW) Act were uncovered during inspections.

According to Dr. Pawar, the lackadaisical attitude of the civic body’s health department has compromised patient safety and healthcare standards in the city. As a result, the state health department conducted inspections of private hospitals and issued notices to all violators. This statewide drive aims to ensure compliance with regulations and enhance patient care.

Several deficiencies were uncovered during the inspections, including inadequate space between beds, lack of emergency care equipment, and improper biomedical waste management. Violations ranged from unsealed sonography machines to expired medications, highlighting the poor healthcare system in these establishments.

Dr. Pawar emphasized the importance of holding hospitals accountable for providing clean and safe services to patients. He reiterated that the state health department’s actions aim to improve healthcare standards and ensure transparency in medical practices. The crackdown serves as a reminder to private hospitals to adhere to regulations and prioritize patient care above all else.
