Pune: Pune Railway Station has been equipped with a total of five escalators since 2019, providing passengers with added convenience during their commute. To ensure continuous functionality and passenger safety, regular monthly maintenance of the escalators is carried out.

As per the information, the escalators are manufactured, installed, and commissioned by M/s Johnson Lifts Ltd. They are designed to last for 20 years, eliminating the need for immediate replacement.

In the event of any malfunction, SMS alerts are sent directly to the on-duty staff, inspectors, and officers, prompting them to take immediate action to resolve the issue. Moreover, even during power failures, the escalators are designed to continue operating by utilizing an additional power supply from a DG set, enabling them to auto-start.

The Center for Railway Information Systems (CRIS) is currently developing a software-based maintenance controller for escalators installed at various stations of the Central Railway. This online asset monitoring system will provide real-time monitoring of escalator performance, although its implementation may take some time.

As per railways, the most common causes of escalator failures at present include screws and baggage chains getting stuck, unnecessary pressing of the emergency button, and improper handling of luggage. On average, the escalators experience 8-10 stops per day, but they are promptly repaired within 10-15 minutes. Passengers are kindly requested to pay attention to these factors to ensure the smooth operation of the escalators.
