The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is expressing worry about the declining water levels in the city’s reservoirs following the monsoon season.

To address this, the PMC has proposed a weekly one-day water cut in the new year and has taken steps to implement it.

Since the end of the monsoon season this year, the PMC has been proactive in response to decreased water storage in the dams compared to the previous year.

During a meeting of the Canal Advisory Committee, the PMC decided to allocate only 16 billion cubic feet (TMC) of water, despite continuing to extract 1600 million Liters per day (MLD) from the dams. The Water Resources Department has conveyed their concerns about the deviation from the committee’s decisions to the PMC in writing. In response, the PMC has assured the department of their cautious approach towards water usage.

However, the Water Resources Department has requested further details on the specific measures that will be put in place. The PMC has outlined their strategies to conserve two TMC of water out of the total 16 TMC allocated for the Water Resources Department.

This conservation effort will lead to a reduction of water supply by one day every week. Additionally, the PMC is actively involved in various ongoing initiatives, including the replacement of old water pipes, with the goal of minimizing water distribution leakage.

Residents have expressed concerns about the upcoming weekly water cut, leading them to adopt water-saving habits and be mindful of their water usage.Â
