Pune Sees Improved Traffic Speeds on Pune-Solapur Road as "Mission 15" Aims to Decongest Key Roads
The Pune city traffic police and Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) have reported a 15-25% rise in average vehicle speeds along the Pune-Solapur road, particularly between Golibar Maidan junction and Ravidarshan chowk. This improvement is part of the city’s “Mission 15,” an initiative to decongest 32 major roads that carry 85% of Pune’s traffic.
In the first phase of Mission 15, enhancements will be made to 15 key city roads over the next three months. The plan includes filling potholes, leveling roads, addressing waterlogging, relocating traffic signal poles and bus stops, removing encroachments, and widening roads. These measures aim to reduce traffic congestion and improve travel efficiency.
Recent statistics show the average speed on the Pune-Solapur road from Swargate to Ravidarshan chowk increased from 23.91 km/h in September 2024 to 27.95 km/h in December 2024. Similarly, speeds from Ravidarshan chowk to Swargate rose from 20.70 km/h to 25.79 km/h during the same period.
Key improvements included easing congestion at Ramtekdi chowk, Sopan Baug chowk, and Fatima Nagar junction. Notably, closing Fatima Nagar junction reduced jams on Shivarkar Road. A new private bus stop at Shewalewadi helped decongest Magarpatta chowk, while widening the Ramtekdi Overbridge by removing a pedestrian tunnel further improved traffic flow.
Next week, the focus will shift to the Pune-Ahmednagar road and Koregaon Park’s North Main Road. These upgrades aim to benefit over 1.6 lakh daily commuters. The PMC, traffic police, and other agencies are working in coordination to ensure smooth and efficient roadwork.
This initiative reflects the city’s commitment to tackling traffic woes and ensuring safer, faster travel for Pune residents.
