Pune, May 18, 2026: City based Maharashtra Cultural Centre is hosting Shreeram Lagoo National Theatre Festival in the city from May 25th to 31st at Shreeram Lagoo Rang-avakash – Pune. The festival in its first edition will have carefully selected plays showcasing diverse voices, innovative story-telling and the evolving spirit of contemporary theatre.

Rajesh Deshmukh, Secretary, Maharashtra Cultural Centre said, “This 7 days theatre fest which falls in the category of experimental theatre will showcase 9 different plays from different states of the country including Maharashtra, Assam, West Bengal, Karnataka, Kerala and New Delhi. These plays will be primarily in Hindi, English and Gibberish language. There would be an element of the regional language but the plays would be easy to understand for the audience”.

“The city of Pune has major festivals that attract connoisseurs of art from all over the country including Sawai Gandharva Bhimsen Mahotsav for Indian Classical Music, Pune International Film Festival for Films, Pune Festival a cultural festival. With this Shreem Lagoo National Theatre festival we are trying to bridge this gap that exists for an annual national theatre fest, especially the experimental theatre”, he added.

Prasad Vanarase, Festival Director of this National Theatre Fest said that the grand opening of the inaugural edition of Shreeram Lagoo National Theater Fest will take place in the august presence Paresh Rawal and Naseeruddin Shah, veterans from the film and theatre on May 25th. The festival will not only given an idea about what’s happening in the experimental theatre in different parts of the country but will also give an opportunity to learn about new trends in the experimental theatre to the theatre lovers.

It will have 2 major symposiums based on topics like journeys in experimentation in Indian theatre and changes in play script in Marathi theatre after the year 2000. These symposiums will have participations from some of the best known theatre personalities like Abhilash Pillai, K. Tomba from Manipur, Anurupa Roy from New Delhi and Yuki EIlias. The symposium on Marathi theatre will have participation of likes of Kedar Shinde and Abhiram Bhadkamkar. Master Class sessions would be conducted by the veterans during this festival, Vanarase informed.

Apart from the well curated plays from various regions of the country there would be platform performances, script reading sessions of some upcoming Marathi plays.

Ticket rate is just Rs.100/- per play. Entry to symposiums and the inauguration program would be free. However, pre registration is required to be done from ticketkhidakee.

The plays that are going to showcased during this festival include Raghunath (Assamese), Naam Mein Ka Rakhwo Hai? (Hindi), Do You Know This Song? (Hindi and English), Eden Creek, Bengal (English), The Zoo Story(Hindi), Shyok (Hindim Ladakhi, Balti), Home In a Suitcase (Hindi and English), Apne Ghar Jaisa (Hindi) and Kohoo- An Anthology on Rails (Multilingual).
