Pune sizzles in scorching heat as temperature soars to 44.4 Degrees Celsius

Pune city has been experiencing severe hot and humid weather, with some areas recording temperatures as high as 44 degrees Celsius. On Thursday, May 11 Koregaon Park area recorded temperature of 44.4 degrees Celsius. The Talegaon Dhamdhere and Wadgaon Sheri areas witnessed maximum temperatures of 43.8 and 43.1 degrees Celsius respectively.

The temperature at Shivajinagar on Thursday was recorded at 41.0 degrees.  According to the data from the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) in Pune, the temperature in Hadapsar spiked to 42.0 degrees Celsius, while locations like Chinchwad and Magarpatta recorded temperatures of 42.5 and 41.7 degrees Celsius respectively.

The IMD has attributed the heatwave to a strong easterly wave and a tough in easterlies running from north Kerala to south Madhya Maharashtra, which is causing local instability and resulting in thunder activity, short period gusty winds, and lightning. The high temperatures have prompted authorities to issue warnings to the public to take necessary precautions and avoid outdoor activities during the hottest parts of the day.

The IMD issued a Yellow alert. Moderate temperature, Heat is tolerable for general public but moderate health concern for vulnerable people e.g. infants, elderly, people with chronic diseases. Avoid heat exposure, Wear lightweight, light coloured, loose, cotton clothes. Cover your head, use a cloth, hat or umbrella.

It is important for people to take necessary precautions during such extreme weather conditions to prevent heat-related illnesses.

Tips to stay cool and safe during a heatwave :

Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water and other fluids like coconut water, buttermilk, and fruit juice to prevent dehydration.

Dress appropriately: Wear lightweight, light-colored, and loose-fitting clothing to allow your skin to breathe.

Stay indoors during peak hours: Try to stay indoors during the hottest hours of the day, typically between 11 am and 4 pm.

Use air conditioning or fans: If possible, use air conditioning or fans to cool down your home or workspace.

Avoid strenuous activities: Avoid strenuous outdoor activities like exercising or gardening during the hottest hours of the day.

Take frequent breaks: If you must be outdoors, take frequent breaks in the shade or indoors to rest and cool down.

Protect your skin: Apply sunscreen with at least SPF 30 and wear a wide-brimmed hat to protect your skin from the sun’s harmful rays.
