The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) began a mass anti-rabies campaign in Pune to neuter all stray animals in Pune city to make them rabies-free. However, only 15 stray animals have been given vaccines by the PMC on the first day.

Speaking to Pune Pulse, Dr Sarita Funde, PMC Veterinary Superintendent, said “Though we have begun the anti-rabies campaign, currently we lack manpower. As of now, for one area, there are only 3 personnel assigned – 1 doctor & 2 dog catchers. Hence, this is the reason for a low number of vaccinations. We have various NGOs, animal activists, organizations etc who are providing us full support. However, we need more & more volunteers & people to come forward and work for this anti-rabies campaign.”

As per information, animal activists have stressed the need for the PMC to get its act together and collaborate with volunteers, especially feeders, to make the campaign successful.

During the campaign, which started from Kharadi around 11 am, two municipal teams managed to administer anti-rabies vaccine to seven and eight canines at WTR Kharadi and Thite Vasti respectively. Each team comprised a doctor and two dogcatchers. The campaign will continue till the city is declared free of rabies.
