In a significant incident on Monday night, students from Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) discovered Gutkha and other tobacco products being sold at a shop near the girls’ hostel. The sale of these items sparked outrage among students, who staged protests, leading to the shop’s closure by university authorities.

The protests followed an earlier incident involving the alleged discovery of 750 grams of cannabis at the boys’ hostel. Students criticized the university for not filing a police report or taking action against those involved, expressing concerns over campus safety and student well-being.

Rahul Sasane, a PhD researcher, highlighted the university’s negligence, noting that tobacco sales within 100 meters of educational institutions are banned. Student leaders from various organizations, including the University Students  Committee and Yuva Sena, called for stricter enforcement of regulations and action against the shop owner. Additionally, they demanded the removal of faculty members overseeing campus canteens, holding them responsible for the situation.

Despite receiving assurances from university officials, students emphasized the need for stronger preventive measures to ensure a safe and tobacco-free campus environment.
