Pune : Two 16 year old boys drown in Shirur’s Bhima river

Sunday afternoon turned tragic after two young boys lost their lives in a serious drowning accident in the Bhima river in Shirur.

Police have identified the deceased as Anurag Vijay Mandala, 16, and Gaurav Gurulinga Swamy, both 16 year old. According to police, the duo ventured into the river for a swim when unforeseen circumstances took a devastating turn.

Eyewitnesses reported that Anurag and Gaurav were swimming in the Bhima river on Sunday when the dams unexpectedly opened, causing a sudden and powerful current. Caught off guard, the boys struggled to cope with the force of the water and tragically drowned. Nearby swimmers witnessed the incident and immediately called for help, desperately hoping for a rescue.

Upon receiving the distress call, the Shikrapur Police and the Pune Metropolitan Development Authority (PMRDA) fire brigade swiftly arrived at the scene. Determined to locate and rescue the missing boys, the rescue team launched an extensive search operation. Unfortunately, due to the encroaching darkness, the search had to be temporarily suspended for safety reasons.

However, the rescue operation resumed on Monday and the rescue team found bodies.

Following the incident, authorities urge the public to exercise caution and follow safety guidelines when engaging in recreational activities near rivers or other bodies of water.
