In a bid to alleviate the perennial traffic woes plaguing the Vishrantwadi area of Pune, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has initiated the first phase of the much-awaited Vishrantwadi flyover and grade separator project. Following the conclusion of the tendering process, the PMC has swiftly moved into action, with the appointed contractor initiating crucial soil testing procedures.

Speaking on the progress of the project, a senior official from the PMC overseeing the endeavour highlighted the significance of soil testing in the pre-construction phase. “Soil testing is a critical step undertaken before commencing the actual construction of the flyover. It serves to assess the suitability of the soil for the proposed infrastructure,” remarked the official.

With an estimated cost of ₹ 63 crore, the project aims to ease the daily commotion and traffic for countless residents and commuters navigating through the area. Furthermore, as part of the project’s scope, the PMC has devised plans to relocate existing pedestrian bridges at Pratik Nagar Chowk and Shivajinagar to accommodate the construction of new paths for pedestrians. This holistic approach underscores the municipality’s commitment to enhancing both vehicular and pedestrian traffic flow in the vicinity.

Vishrantwadi, a bustling locality with a significant traffic of vehicles moving towards Alandi Road and Dhanori-Lohegaon-Charholi, has long grappled with congestion issues due to limited road infrastructure. While demand persists for additional roads, the PMC’s current proposal focuses on establishing a separate route for Alandi Road and implementing a flyover en route to the airport. Despite former local representatives voicing concerns and alleging administrative indifference, the PMC remains consistent in its approach to address the pressing traffic concerns.

The Vishrantwadi flyover spans over an impressive 630.12 metres in length and measures 7 metres in width. It will comprise 11 pillars, with segments extending 197.12 metres towards the Alandi side and 142 metres towards the Lohegaon side. The grade separator component of the project is set to be 595 metres long  and seven metres wide, with varying lengths allocated to the Alandi, Lohegaon and Yerawada sides.
