Pune: Wanowrie residents are plagued with the non-stop dumping of garbage in Shantinagar, Fatima Nagar, Samvidhan Chowk, and more.

Speaking to Pune Pulse, Dr Sharmila Lodhi, a resident of Shantinagar, Wanowrie said, “Garbage is being dumped continuously in this area. Since this area is just behind the main road, when people want to throw any kind of waste here, without thinking, they simply come and dump the waste here. There are many shops, and roadside businesses here that simply dump their waste materials here. A lot of stink and foul smell spreads here, ultimately leading to the rise of mosquitoes, diseases, etc. The garbage picker doesn’t pick up waste without getting money. When complained to the relevant PMC official, they either ignore the issue or do something very temporary such as cleaning just for the namesake. There is no permanent resolution to this.”

Dr Leena Shah, another resident of Wanowrie said, “The garbage problem is persistently going on for several years. The PMC is talking about implementing a Clean Up Drive at Samvidhan Chowk and all. However, the real need is permanently removing garbage from here. That is not happening at all.”

Amogh Gaikwad, a resident of Wanowrie said, “This garbage dumping issue is not only in Shanti Nagar, but also in several other areas of Wanowrie. Fatima Nagar, areas surrounding Shanti Nagar, etc. are just filled with garbage. Every time, this issue is raised at various official meetings. But no solution comes out of it.”

Nisar Mujawar, Deputy Sanitary Inspector, PMC, said “As of now, all areas in Wanowrie are completely clean with no garbage even in small places. PMC is conducting awareness drives and much more regarding cleanliness. Rest assured, we will keep the entire Wanowrie area clean.”
