Pune Water Tanker Operators Likely To Go On Indefinite Strike From April 15. Know Why.
Pune, April 14, 2026: Water tanker operators in Pune have announced an indefinite suspension of tanker water supply starting April 15, citing ongoing protests and grievances against alleged harassment by traffic police and recent regulatory changes.
The water tanker suppliers have suspended supply in Handewadi, Mohamadwadi, Undri and Pisoli since today morning to many societies.
In a joint communication issued by tanker owners operating in the NIBM–Cloud Nine area, the decision follows a recent unfortunate incident that has drawn widespread attention across social media and news channels, where tanker drivers and lobby have been labelled as part of a “tanker mafia.”
The operators have alleged that despite having valid documentation, traffic police have been stopping tankers, behaving aggressively with drivers, and increasingly focusing on vehicle seizures by imposing new rules and conditions. One of the key concerns raised is the mandatory requirement to appoint a helper for each tanker, leading to additional operational costs, including a daily fine of ₹1,500 in case of non-compliance.

As a result, tanker operators have collectively demanded an increase of ₹100 per tanker to offset rising costs. They have stated that until their demands are addressed, water supply through tankers will remain suspended indefinitely.
Highlighting that water is an essential commodity, the tanker owners emphasized that they have been supplying it at reasonable rates and expressed concern that the entire sector is being unfairly targeted due to isolated incidents. They also criticized the administration for not fulfilling its responsibilities while taking strict action against tanker operators.
The tanker association has urged housing societies to support their cause by writing to local traffic authorities and the Pune Police Commissioner, requesting that tanker operators not be harassed over minor issues, especially during the ongoing summer season when water demand is high.
The operators expressed regret for the inconvenience caused and reiterated their willingness to resume timely water supply once the issues are resolved.
Nanasaheb Ghule Patil, a tanker operator from Mohamadwadi told Pune Pulse that talks are being held. We are yet to get the confirmation. It is difficult to manage the expenses also hiring a helper on each tanker will only surge our expenses. Also, heavy fines are being imposed on us even when tanker owners are complying to all rules and regulations.
Nandkishor Jagtap, head, water department, Pune Municipal Corporation said, “PMC is trying to work on war footing at the Mohammadwadi overhead water tanks to activate them soon. Also, soon a plan is being made to extend network for new villages including Undri and Pisoli.”
When asked about the actions being taken against the tanker drivers, Himmat Jadhav, Deputy Commissioner of traffic, Pune Police stated that following the rules is a must. Any tanker driver found flouting norms will face action. “
