Pune, May 24, 2025: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a four-day weather alert for Pune, warning of thunderstorms, heavy rainfall, and gusty winds expected to continue until May 27. An orange alert has been sounded for the city from May 25 to 27, signalling the likelihood of moderate to heavy rainfall during this period. Citizens are advised to take necessary precautions and avoid venturing out during intense weather activity.
The ongoing spell of rain is attributed to a well-marked low-pressure area over the east-central Arabian Sea, off the south Konkan coast. According to the IMD’s latest bulletin, the system persisted in the same area as of Friday evening (May 23) and is likely to intensify into a depression within 24 hours, moving northwards and influencing weather patterns across western Maharashtra.
City Sees Steady Showers
Pune and surrounding areas experienced steady rainfall through Thursday night into Friday morning. IMD’s weather stations recorded varied rainfall across the district during the 24-hour period ending at 8:30 am on Friday:
- NDA: 17.5 mm
- Pashan: 13.5 mm
- Chinchwad: 12 mm
- Shivajinagar: 10.5 mm
- Hadapsar and Wadgaon Sheri: 10 mm each
- Lohegaon: 8.2 mm
- Koregaon Park: 7.5 mm
- Bhor (outside city): 49 mm
- Girivan: 28 mm
- Baramati: 37 mm
Between 8:30 am and 5:30 pm on Friday, rainfall intensity reduced but remained widespread. Baramati again recorded the highest during this period with 37 mm, while Dhamdhere received 7 mm. Other readings included:
- Haveli and Wadgaon Sheri: 6 mm each
- Hadapsar: 5.5 mm
- Bhor: 4 mm
- Shivajinagar: 2.7 mm
- Koregaon Park and Pashan: 2.5 mm each
- NDA and Dudulgaon: 2 mm each
- Purandar, Narayangaon, Ballalwadi, and Daund: 0.5 mm each
Upcoming Forecast and Regional Outlook
The IMD has forecast fairly widespread to widespread light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds (40-50 kmph) across Konkan & Goa and Madhya Maharashtra, including Pune, from May 24 to 29. Marathwada is expected to witness similar conditions from May 24 to 27.
An additional warning has been issued for isolated extremely heavy rainfall over Konkan and Goa on May 24 and 25, while Madhya Maharashtra, including Pune, may face heavy to very heavy rain on May 25.

- May 24 (Saturday): Thunderstorms with lightning, moderate rain, and gusty winds (40–50 kmph) at isolated locations.
- May 25 (Sunday): Orange alert in effect. Heavy rainfall likely at several places.
- May 26 (Monday): Thunderstorms with lightning, intense showers, and strong winds (40–50 kmph).
- May 27 (Tuesday): Continued thunderstorms with light to moderate rainfall and gusty winds in some areas.

Residents are urged to:
- Avoid open areas during lightning activity.
- Stay away from weak structures and large trees during storms.
- Secure loose items on balconies and terraces.
- Stay updated through official IMD channels and local news alerts.
Though the southwest monsoon is yet to set in over Kerala, these pre-monsoon showers are a clear sign of its gradual advancement. Puneites are advised to remain vigilant and prepare for continued weather fluctuations in the coming days.
