Pune: As temperatures continue to rise globally, Pune has been identified as one of the cities that is experiencing a significant increase in temperature due to multiple reasons. In order to better understand this phenomenon, a study has been planned to determine if urban heat islands are formed in Pune’s Koregaon Park, Magarpatta,Vadgaonsheri areas, said officials from IMD.

Urban heat islands are formed when urban areas, due to their high population density, tend to be warmer than the surrounding rural areas. This can be due to a number of factors, such as the lack of green cover, the presence of heat-absorbing surfaces such as concrete and asphalt, and a higher concentration of heat-emitting activities such as traffic.

Such a study will monitor temperature variations in the three areas over a period of time. IMD data shows that many locations in Pune including Koregaon Park,Vadgaon Sheri and many more crossed the 40 degree celsius mark already.

To better understand why the temperatures are higher in certain areas, such as Vadgaonsheri, Koregaon Park, and Lavale, a study is likely to  be conducted to determine whether urban heat islands have formed in these locations. The study aims to provide insights into these factors and help develop strategies to mitigate their impact on the environment and human health.
