The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued alerts for Pune city and its surrounding ghats, predicting heavy rainfall today. According to IMD-GFS forecasts, areas including Tamhini, Lonavala, Khandala, and Kundalika are expected to experience heavy to very heavy rain. Pune city, on the other hand, is likely to face moderate rain with isolated heavy spells, prompting a yellow alert.

Currently, nationwide rainfall data for July shows varying trends across regions. Central and South India are experiencing rainfall well above normal, with increases of 33.9% and 35.7% respectively. In contrast, East and Northeast India are witnessing a deficit with a decrease of 16.1%, while Northwest India sees an 8% deficit.

The specific forecast for Pune city warns of moderate to heavy rain, while the ghats are expected to bear heavier downpours, prompting an orange alert. Residents are advised to avoid unnecessary travel to the ghats due to potentially hazardous conditions.

Local authorities caution that heavy rainfall could lead to localized flooding, affecting traffic and posing risks to poorly constructed structures. Agricultural areas and rivers might also face challenges, necessitating vigilance from concerned authorities. For those planning travel, it’s advised to check road conditions beforehand and avoid risky routes.

As Pune and its surrounding areas brace for significant rainfall, preemptive measures and adherence to safety guidelines are crucial to mitigate potential risks and ensure public safety.
