The stifling heatwave that has enveloped Maharashtra and Pune is expected to ease slightly in the upcoming days, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicting thunderstorms and light rainfall activity from May 12 to 14. According to IMD’s national forecast released on Wednesday, thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds, reaching speeds of 30-40kmph, are anticipated at isolated places across various regions, including Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada, on May 12.

An IMD official highlighted the likelihood of light rains in Pune and surrounding areas starting May 12, attributed to a cyclonic circulation over the Northeast Arabian Sea and adjoining Gujarat region, leading to moisture incursion. Although the showers may not be heavy, they are expected to provide much-needed relief from the scorching temperatures. The official mentioned that the rain might marginally decrease temperatures, which have already dipped below 40°C in some parts of the city due to increased moisture and cloud cover.

According to IMD data, Pune city recorded a maximum temperature of 39.4°C on Wednesday, while Malegaon experienced the highest temperature at 42.6°C. Nashik and Aurangabad registered maximum temperatures of 39.2°C and 40.2°C, respectively. As anticipation builds for the anticipated rain showers, residents are hopeful for a respite from the sweltering heatwave.
