Indian single malt whiskies are making waves on the global stage, surpassing renowned counterparts from Ireland and America. Radico Khaitan’s Rampur Asava recently clinched the prestigious title of ‘World’s Best Whisky’ at the John Barleycorn Awards 2023, marking a significant moment in the evolving landscape of premium spirits.

Priced at ₹ 9,390 in duty-free outlets, Rampur Asava stands out with its unique balance of tropical fruity notes, and hints of apricot, blackberry and plum, complemented by undertones of tobacco and spices. This recognition follows Indri’s ₹9,000 Diwali Collector’s Edition winning the

“Best in Show, double gold” award at the Whiskies of the World blind tasting in San Francisco, showcasing the prowess of Indian single malts.

The John Barleycorn Awards evaluated excellence in various categories, including taste, marketing strategies, and package design. Rampur Asava’s triumph underscores the fierce competition on the international spirits stage and the rising influence of Indian distilleries.

Crafted in the oldest distillery in India since 1943, Rampur embodies 75 years of distillation mastery, utilizing traditional copper pot stills.

The distillery’s location near the Himalayas contributes to the spirit’s distinctive flavour and depth, with carefully selected barley from the Himalayan foothills cultivated through traditional practices. Non-chill filtration preserves the whisky’s aroma, while small-batch distillation and maturation in American Standard Bourbon Casks and European Oak sherry casks impart a unique character.

Rampur Asava’s victory in a blind-tasting competition, where it outshone scotch, American, and Irish whiskies, is a testament to its exceptional craftsmanship. The blind-tasting was judged by Barleycorn Society members, reinforcing the growing recognition of Indian single malts. Distilled in the Rampur distillery in Uttar Pradesh, this Indian Single Malt undergoes a special process, starting in American Bourbon barrels and finishing in Indian Cabernet Sauvignon casks.

As we witness this spirited revolution, Indian single malts are redefining standards and setting new benchmarks globally. Rampur Asava, along with other offerings from the distillery like Rampur Select, Rampur PX Sherry Cask, and Rampur Double Cask, exemplifies the rich tapestry of Indian whisky craftsmanship. This triumph not only celebrates Rampur’s legacy but also signals a paradigm shift in the perception of Indian whiskies on the world stage.
