Pune, February 4, 2025: The Rapid Response Team (RRT) appointed by the state health department has directed Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) health officials to focus their efforts on areas with concentrated cases of suspected Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS). This directive was issued during a review meeting held on Monday, attended by PMC health officials.

According to public health officials, five new suspected GBS cases were reported on Monday, bringing the district’s total to 163. Of these, 127 cases are confirmed, and five suspected deaths have been recorded. The cases include 32 patients from PMC limits, 86 from newly added villages under PMC, 18 from Pimpri Chinchwad, 19 from Pune Rural, and 8 from other districts. So far, 47 patients have been discharged, while 47 remain in ICU, and 21 are on ventilator support.

Dr. Nina Borade, PMC’s health chief, stated that surveillance has been intensified in the affected areas. “Though sporadic cases have been reported in other parts of the city, they are not linked to food or water contamination,” she clarified.

Guidelines and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for managing the outbreak will soon be provided by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, officials added.
