Pune, February 4, 2025: In a shocking revelation, 19 out of 30 private water purification plants (RO plants) supplying water to the Sinhagad Road area have been found distributing contaminated water. This comes amid rising cases of Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) in the region. Pune Municipal Commissioner Dr. Rajendra Bhosale has taken serious note of the situation and directed the water supply department to take strict action against private tankers and purification plants involved.

Earlier, contamination was detected in water supplied by private tankers to Khadakwasla, Kirkitwadi, and surrounding areas. Over the past few days, a spike in GBS cases has been reported in Khadakwasla, Nanded, Kirkitwadi, Nandoshi, Dhayari, DSK Vishwa, and Ambegaon. In response, both state and central teams have visited the affected areas and instructed the municipal and district administration to implement corrective measures.

Initial inspections of local well water showed no signs of contamination. However, further tests conducted on water from private tankers revealed the presence of E. coli and other harmful bacteria. Despite these findings, the water supply department had only issued written warnings to the tanker owners, advising them to use bleaching powder for purification. No stringent action was taken at that time.

Samples from 30 private purification plants were recently tested, and 19 were confirmed to supply contaminated water. Following this, Commissioner Bhosale has instructed the water supply department to take legal action under municipal laws against the operators of these tankers and purification plants.
