Rare Case in Pune: Woman Swallows 20-Cm Toothbrush While Cleaning Her Tongue
A 40-year-old woman from Pune accidentally ingested a 20-cm-long toothbrush while cleaning her tongue, marking the first case of its kind in Maharashtra and surprising medical professionals across the nation.
She was quickly taken to DY Patil Hospital in Pimpri-Chinchwad to prevent choking on the foreign object. Dr. Abhijeet Karad, the gastroenterologist who treated her, expressed disbelief at how someone could swallow a toothbrush.
He noted that, “Toothbrush ingestion is extraordinarily rare worldwide, with fewer than 30 reported cases,” and highlighted that individuals with certain mental health issues, like schizophrenia, bulimia, or anorexia, are more likely to experience such incidents. Dr. Karad explained that while healthcare providers often see cases of people swallowing small items like coins, this incident involving a large toothbrush is unprecedented in Maharashtra.
Last year, a Spanish woman made headlines after swallowing a toothbrush, and now a similar incident has occurred in India.
