Reel Over Reality: Couple Faces Backlash for Risking Child’s Life at Overflowing Dam
In a chilling example of how social media validation is increasingly being placed above personal safety, a couple from Rajasthan’s Bharatpur district is under fire for allegedly endangering the life of their young daughter in pursuit of a viral Instagram reel.
The disturbing incident took place on July 4 at the scenic but now dangerously overflowing Bandh Baraitha Dam, located in the Rudawal police station limits. The video, now widely shared across platforms, captures a harrowing moment where a frightened seven-year-old girl is made to sit beyond the safety railing of the dam—on a narrow iron structure positioned directly above fast-moving floodwaters.

According to reports, the father, identified as Uma Shankar, a resident of the local area, is seen in the footage physically placing his daughter on a gauge box outside the dam’s protective barriers. With only an angle iron supporting her and no safety harness or equipment in place, the minor appears visibly unsettled and scared. The father then lets go of her hands, and instead of pulling her back to safety, both parents are seen encouraging her to maintain the pose for the camera.
Even more shockingly, the mother, standing nearby, can be heard cheering the child on, seemingly oblivious to the life-threatening danger.
The controversial video was initially posted from Uma Shankar’s Instagram account, but was taken down shortly after intense backlash began to mount. However, by that time, it had already gone viral, sparking outrage among netizens who condemned the act as sheer negligence. Many social media users have expressed deep concern over the growing trend of risking lives—especially those of children—for fleeting moments of online fame.
Public anger has since spilled over to authorities. Local police at Baraith Police Station, led by in-charge Bharat Lal, have acknowledged awareness of the incident. Although the identities of the individuals involved were initially unknown, investigations are now underway to trace the couple. A constable has also been deployed at the dam site to prevent similar stunts from taking place.
“This is a serious safety violation. Efforts are being made to identify those involved,” said Officer Bharat Lal.
The Baretha Dam, particularly popular during the monsoon season when the waters swell dramatically, draws large crowds from nearby areas. However, officials warn that the increasing tendency to use such natural sites for dangerous social media content is putting not only participants at risk, but also emergency personnel who may be called upon for rescue operations.
What’s most troubling, say observers, is the normalization of such behavior—parents involving their children in high-risk scenarios just for likes and views. It raises urgent questions about digital responsibility and the moral compass of content creators.
As the investigation continues, the incident stands as a sobering reminder of the high price some are willing to pay for internet fame—and the innocent lives that can be caught in the crossfire.
