Relief as HSRP Deadline Extended In Maharashtra: ₹1,000 Fine From July 1 For Vehicles Without New Number Plates
The Maharashtra government has extended the deadline for installing High Security Registration Plates (HSRP) on older vehicles till June 30, 2026. Vehicle owners who fail to comply could face penalties and enforcement action from July 1.
The Maharashtra Transport Department has granted another extension for the installation of High Security Registration Plates (HSRP) on vehicles registered before April 1, 2019. Vehicle owners now have until June 30, 2026, to complete the process, offering relief to lakhs of motorists across the state.

Under the revised rules, all vehicles registered before April 1, 2019, must either install HSRP plates or secure an installation appointment before the June 30 deadline. The move comes after authorities reviewed the pace of installations and found that a large number of vehicles are still awaiting compliance.
From July 1, 2026, enforcement drives will begin across Maharashtra. Vehicle owners found using vehicles without HSRP plates may be fined ₹1,000. Officials have also warned that repeated violations could attract repeated penalties during inspections.
According to transport department data, a significant number of vehicles are yet to install the tamper-proof number plates despite multiple deadline extensions. Authorities have repeatedly extended the compliance period because of high demand, appointment delays and limited installation capacity at authorised centres.
To obtain an HSRP plate, vehicle owners must register online, provide vehicle details including registration, engine and chassis numbers, select an authorised fitment centre or dealer, pay the prescribed fee and schedule an appointment for installation.
Transport officials have urged motorists not to wait until the final days of June, as appointment slots may fill up quickly. Citizens who complete the booking process before the deadline are expected to receive relief even if their installation date falls later because of appointment availability.
HSRP plates are designed with advanced security features such as tamper-proof locks and unique identification elements, helping authorities improve vehicle identification and curb misuse, theft and fraudulent registrations.
