Residents demand support for waste management in Wanowrie
Societies receive notices for failing to compost wet waste within their premises
Over 20 societies in Wanowrie were recently served notices by the Pune Municipal Corporation for not composting wet waste within their premises.
The civic body informed that the notices were served to societies as per the Supreme Court guidelines issued in 2016, Solid Waste Management Rules (revised) for failing to compost wet waste within their premises.
The notices caught the societies unawares and this led to mounting wet waste within the premises of the society fuelling health concerns.
Jigar Shah, chairman, Sai Royale society said, “Our society received a notice from Pune Municipal Corporation for not composting the wet waste within our premises but since our system has not been working we had to hand it over to PMC. We have shown our willingness to compost within our premises.”
Ravindra Jadhav, secretary, Ganga Samruddhi informed that they are facing some issues with the composting project in their society. “We are looking for vendors who can help us to manage the wet waste management,” he said.
Anil Sawant from Dayanand society informed that societies which have limited space within their premises are helpless and have to give the waste to the PMC. The civic body should sort out the problems of societies. Also, the societies which are willing to set up composting plants within their premises must be assisted and given full support until they become active, he opined.
Asha Raut, head, solid waste management cell, Pune municipal corporation said, “It is necessary for societies generating more than 100 kgs to abide by the Solid Waste Management Rules and compost wet waste within the premises. Societies must take the onus of handling waste responsibly. PMC is also resolving the issues faced by societies and assisting them in setting up the waste management projects.”
Mario Britto, chairman, Camelia society said, “We have received a letter from PMC stating that they didnt find any wet waste composting system in our premises and we would be fined if we fail to start the process.”
