Retired IAS Officer Shares Nostalgic First Job Offer from TCS Mumbai: Salary of Rs 1,300!
Retired IAS officer Rohit Kumar Singh recently shared a nostalgic memory about his first salary, which he received from Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) Mumbai 40 years ago after graduating from the Indian Institute of Technology, Varanasi (IIT BHU). In a post on X, Singh, an IAS officer from the 1989 batch of the Rajasthan cadre, described his early working days at TCS and reflected on how a modest salary of Rs 1,300 was considered “princely” at that time.
Singh recalled, “A little more than 40 years ago, I got my first job at TCS Mumbai through campus recruitment at IIT BHU. With a princely salary of 1,300 Rupees, the ocean view from the 11th Floor of Air India Building at Nariman Point was regal indeed.” He graduated with a degree in Electrical Engineering before taking up the TCS position.
After a brief stint at TCS, Singh chose to pursue a Master’s in Computer Engineering at Clarkson University in New York. He later cleared the UPSC exam and joined the Indian Administrative Services (IAS) in 1989.

His post has gone viral, prompting numerous users on X to share their thoughts. When one user asked about his starting salary as a probationer in the IAS, Singh replied that it was Rs 2,200. Another user, Dr. Apurva, inquired whether Singh would consider rejoining TCS if given the opportunity. Singh responded, “Not really. IAS provides amazing opportunities across sectors. It’s immensely satisfying when you contribute to social causes and public welfare.”
Currently, Singh serves on the National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (NCDRC). According to the commission’s website, he earned his electrical engineering degree from IIT BHU. His journey from TCS to a prominent role in public service exemplifies a commitment to making a difference in society. Over the past three decades, Singh has held numerous significant positions in his career, contributing to various social and public welfare initiatives.
