Indian captain Rohit Sharma responded to his critics and broke his recent slump in form by scoring an impressive century against England in the second ODI on Sunday, February 9, at the Barabati Stadium in Cuttack, leading India to a series-clinching six-wicket victory.

Sharma delivered a classic performance, scoring 119 runs off just 90 balls, marking a significant return to form after a challenging period.

The Indian captain’s innings propelled him alongside Sachin Tendulkar in an exclusive group of Indian batsmen and established a remarkable world record in One Day International cricket. At 36 years old, he achieved a century in just 76 balls, making it the second-fastest of his career in the ODI format, which set the foundation for India to successfully chase the target of 305 runs, boasting a strike rate of 132.22, which featured 12 fours and seven sixes.

Rohit’s century in Cuttack marked his 36th in international cricket across all formats since turning 30. He has now established a new record for the most centuries by an Indian player after reaching the age of 30. The previous record was held by Sachin Tendulkar, who scored 35 centuries during his 30s.

Rohit has made his mark in cricket history by establishing a world record for the highest number of One Day International centuries scored by a player after turning 30. He is the first cricketer to achieve 22 centuries in the 50-over format post his 30th birthday. This record was previously held jointly by Sri Lankan icons Sanath Jayasuriya and Tilakaratne Dilshan.

Rohit Sharma has achieved remarkable success since turning 30, amassing 22 centuries in One Day Internationals, 10 in Test matches, and four in T20 internationals.

Among international cricketers, only Kumar Sangakkara, with 43 centuries, is ahead of Rohit in the number of three-figure scores after the age of 30, while Ricky Ponting and Matthew Hayden both tied with him at 36.

During his outstanding performance in Cuttack, Rohit notched his 49th international century, surpassing Rahul Dravid’s total of 48 to become the third-highest century-maker in international cricket history. He has also overtaken Chris Gayle’s record of 331 sixes and is closing in on Shahid Afridi’s world record of 351 sixes in ODI cricket.
