Pune : To address the growing issue of open waste disposal in the city, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is contemplating a substantial hike in fines for individuals found to be littering.

Pune Municipal Commissioner Vikram Kumar is presently reviewing a proposal that would triple the current fine from Rs 180 to Rs 500.

The number of citizens discarding waste in public areas of the city has increased, leading the administration to implement strict measures. Although staff members have been stationed at common dumping locations in an effort to discourage littering, some residents’ disruptive behavior still exists.

Compared to fines for other offenses, the current fine for open garbage dumping is Rs 180, which is a comparatively small sum. The administration has suggested significantly raising the penalty in order to rectify this disparity and deter people from breaking the law.

According to a senior PMC official, the Municipal Commissioner has been asked to approve the proposal to increase the fine to Rs 500. This action is intended to discourage more littering by instilling in citizens a sense of responsibility.

In order to promote a cleaner and greener Pune, the administration actively works to raise awareness among the public and encourages adherence to waste disposal regulations. After the Municipal Commissioner gives his or her approval, the final decision regarding the proposed fine increase will be announced.
