India’s automotive sector is on the brink of a major shift as the FASTag system may soon be removed. Although the government is yet to make an official announcement, reports suggest that the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) is being introduced as the new toll-collection method. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari has confirmed the government’s interest in GNSS, and the technology is currently undergoing testing.

What is the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS)?

GNSS will leverage satellite technology to enhance toll collection. Vehicles will be equipped with a satellite-based unit that tracks their usage of toll roads. Upon exiting a toll road, the system will automatically calculate and charge the appropriate toll based on the distance traveled. This means users will only pay for the distance they have traveled on toll roads. The introduction of GNSS is expected to eliminate the need for traditional toll booths.

Implementation Timeline for GNSS in India

Although an official rollout date has not yet been set, GNSS is currently being tested on two major highways: the Bengaluru-Mysore National Highway (NH-257) in Karnataka and the Panipat-Hisar National Highway (NH-709) in Haryana. The system will be fully implemented once the testing phase is complete and approvals are granted.
