SBI Mutual Fund to Launch First Quant Fund on December 4 with Multi-Factor Approach
SBI Mutual Fund, India’s largest asset management company, is set to launch its first-ever quant fund, the SBI Quant Fund, leveraging advanced technology and data analytics for investment decisions. The new fund aims to adopt a multi-factor investing approach, focusing on momentum, value, quality, growth, and low volatility.
Subscription Details
The SBI Quant Fund will be open for subscription from December 4 to December 18, 2024. It will predominantly target large-cap and mid-cap stocks, selecting from the top 200 companies by market capitalization.
Investment Strategy
The fund employs a multi-factor approach to mitigate risks associated with reliance on a single factor. According to SBI Mutual Fund, this strategy helps reduce underperformance during unfavorable market conditions for specific factors. The portfolio construction will be guided by a composite quant rank derived from momentum, value, quality, and growth parameters, alongside risk constraints like tracking error and liquidity.
Benchmark and Management
The scheme will be benchmarked against the BSE 200 TRI (Total Return Index) and managed by Sukanya Ghosh and Pradeep Kesavan, with the latter overseeing overseas securities.
Quant Funds in India
Quant funds, which rely on quantitative models and algorithms for stock selection and portfolio management, are still at an early stage in India. As of October 2024, the category includes only 10 active schemes with a total AUM of Rs 9,000 crore. SBI Mutual Fund’s entry into the segment adds significant weight to this evolving investment category.
Risks and Opportunities
While quant funds offer the potential for better risk-adjusted returns by combining multiple factors, their success depends heavily on the accuracy and robustness of the underlying models. Flawed or incorrect assumptions in the models could lead to substantial losses, highlighting the importance of precise algorithmic design.
This initiative marks a significant milestone for SBI Mutual Fund, which manages Rs 11 lakh crore in assets, as it steps into the burgeoning quant investment space.
