Shivajinagar & Hadapsar Areas Most Polluted Suburbs in Pune; City Among 131 Most Polluted Cities in India

Pune: As per the official data of the Central Pollution Control Board, Pune city ranks 131 in the list of most polluted cities of India. Shivaji Nagar and Hadapsar, two of the most bustling areas of Pune have become the most polluted areas in Pune city.

Shivaji Nagar and Hadapsar recorded the highest average rate of air pollution as Particulate Matter (PM) 10 and PM 2.5 components in air pollution have been recorded the highest in Shivajinagar & Hadapsar areas in the year 2022.

Speaking to Pune Pulse, Mangesh Dighe, Environmental Conservation Officer, Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) said, “Shivaji Nagar area has a lot of polluting factors such as the ongoing metro work, local level emissions, release of various harmful gases like nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide etc. In Hadapsar, the number of vehicles is also increasing day by day. It has almost doubled. Due to the presence of so many vehicles, pollution is bound to be very high.”

According to the environmental status report 2022-23 of PMC, a total of 35,94,132 registered vehicles were there in Pune city till June 2023. In 2021, the number of registered vehicles were 1,69,552 and in 2022 the number rose to 2,55,757.

A climate action cell has been formed with NGOs, PMC officials, government institutions, educational institutions etc. to chalk out solutions for reducing pollution and moving Pune towards carbon neutrality.
