Governor’s remarks on Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj upsets public sentiments

Pune: In the bandh called by Maha Vikas Aghadi and various organisations in Pune, shops and markets to remain closed till 3 o’clock pm on December 13, 2022 following Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari’s statement insulting Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.

Governor Koshyari labelled Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj as an icon of ‘olden days’ and called Dr BR Ambedkar and Union minister Nitin Gadkari ‘icons of modern times’ which has created a new controversy.   

This remark by the Governor is getting sharp reactions from political parties across Maharashtra.

As per information from reliable sources, essential services such as grocery, bakery and dairy product shops will function till 10 am tomorrow and then observe bandh till 3 pm. Medical shops will remain open during the bandh.

Fatehchand Ranka, president of Federation of Traders Associations of Pune (FATP), said, “All the traders of Pune will be participating in the bandh. Various traders associations have declared their support for the Pune bandh and they will keep their shops closed till 3 pm on December 13.”

Laxmi road which mostly has jewellery, clothes and footwear shops will too be supporting the band though it is a wedding season. Rahul Bora, president of the Laxmi Road Traders Association, said, “Laxmi Road and Market area has around 450-500 shops. All the shops will be participating in the bandh. After 3 o’clock the shops will be open for the people.”

Kavita Ganesh Jadha, owning a flower shop and decoration shop said, “Tomorrow all shops will remain closed in Pune till 3 pm. We are supporting the bandh.”
