Silver Screen to Skies: This Indian Actress Can Fly an Airplane
Once a leading South Indian star, Madhavi now lives in the US and holds a licensed pilot’s wings
In an industry often associated with glamour and stardom, one Indian actress carved a path that went far beyond the silver screen — straight into the skies. Madhavi, a former leading actress of South Indian cinema, is widely regarded as the only Indian actress to hold a pilot’s licence and fly an aircraft.
Madhavi began her acting career at a remarkably young age. She entered Telugu cinema in 1976 at just 14 and quickly rose to prominence across multiple film industries, including Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada and Hindi. Over the years, she worked with some of the biggest names in Indian cinema and became a familiar face in critically acclaimed as well as commercially successful films.
In Tamil cinema, she starred opposite superstars in several memorable roles, becoming a household name with light-hearted comedies as well as intense dramatic performances. Her work in Hindi cinema also drew attention, particularly for her performances alongside senior actors during the peak of her career. By the late 1980s and early 1990s, Madhavi had firmly established herself as one of the most sought-after actresses in the country.
At the height of her success, Madhavi made a life-changing decision. In 1996, she married businessman Ralph Sharma and chose to step away from films. After marriage, she moved to New Jersey in the United States and completely retired from acting. However, leaving cinema did not mean giving up on ambition.

Flying had been a long-cherished dream for Madhavi. After settling in the US, she decided to pursue this passion seriously. She underwent rigorous pilot training in New Jersey, mastering the technical and safety aspects of aviation. Her efforts culminated in earning an official pilot’s licence — a rare achievement, especially for someone from a film background.
Today, Madhavi flies single-engine aircraft and occasionally takes to the skies for personal flights. In interviews, she has described flying as an experience that gives her a deep sense of freedom, confidence and fulfilment.
Now living in the United States with her husband and three daughters, Madhavi has stayed away from public life for nearly three decades. Yet her journey — from a teenage film star to a trained pilot — continues to inspire many, standing as a reminder that reinvention is possible at any stage of life.
