Not everyone enjoys foggy mornings, heavy jackets, and frozen fingers. If winter for you means sunshine, open skies, and days warm enough to stay outdoors, India has plenty of places that quietly defy the cold season. Thanks to tropical coastlines, desert geography, and southern latitudes, several destinations remain pleasantly warm even when much of the country is wrapped in layers.

From beaches and backwaters to deserts and ancient ruins, these places prove that winter in India doesn’t always have to feel like winter.

Goa:

With temperatures hovering between 27 and 32°C, Goa is almost tailor-made for winter travel. Its tropical coastal climate ensures consistent sunshine, warm days, and evenings that are gentle rather than sticky. This balance is exactly why Goa shines between December and February.

Winter here feels festive without being exhausting. December brings Christmas celebrations, flea markets, beach parties, and a buzzing café culture. Whether you choose the lively beaches of North Goa or the calmer stretches in the south, the weather remains ideal for long days outdoors.

Visitors spend time hopping between beaches, trying water sports, heading out on island trips, and sampling seafood at beach shacks and cafés. Old Goa’s heritage churches add a cultural layer, while yoga retreats and markets slow things down when needed. Booking early is essential, especially in December. If you want the same warmth with fewer crowds, late January or early February works best. Goa is easily accessible via Dabolim and Mopa airports, and four to six days is considered an ideal stay.

Andaman Islands:

The Andaman Islands sit close to the equator, which keeps winter temperatures comfortably between 23 and 30°C. This is the season when the islands are at their best. Clear skies, calm seas, and excellent underwater visibility turn the region into a tropical dream.

Havelock Island (Swaraj Dweep) and Neil Island are especially popular for their pristine beaches and relaxed pace. Winter is perfect for swimming, snorkelling, and diving, as coral reefs are clearly visible and sea conditions are stable. Radhanagar Beach remains a highlight, while Neil Island sunsets leave a lasting impression. In Port Blair, the Cellular Jail adds historical depth to the trip.

Flights to Port Blair fill up quickly, as do ferries between islands, so advance planning is crucial. A stay of five to seven days allows enough time to explore without rushing.

Jaisalmer, Rajasthan:

If you want warmth without humidity, Jaisalmer delivers beautifully. Winter temperatures range from 24 to 28°C during the day, thanks to the desert’s ability to retain heat. While nights can get cool, the daytime weather is ideal for exploration.

Known as the Golden City, Jaisalmer looks especially striking under winter sunlight. The sandstone fort and havelis glow softly, and walking through the city feels comfortable rather than exhausting. Visitors explore Jaisalmer Fort, Patwon Ki Haveli, and head out to the Sam Sand Dunes for camel rides and cultural performances.

Packing layers is important because desert evenings can be chilly. Jaisalmer Airport has limited connectivity, so many travellers fly into Jodhpur and continue by road. Three to four days is usually enough to experience the city and its surroundings.

Kerala Backwaters, Alleppey:

Winter in Alleppey doesn’t revolve around beaches, yet it feels just as soothing. With temperatures between 27 and 30°C, the coastal tropical climate keeps days warm and skies mostly clear. The calm weather makes it one of the best seasons for houseboat travel.

Floating through palm-lined canals, watching village life unfold, and enjoying the gentle winter sun reflecting off the water creates a deeply relaxing experience. Most travellers opt for houseboat stays, where fresh fish meals are cooked onboard. Exploring local markets and lagoons adds variety, and many people combine the trip with a short detour to Varkala beach.

Direct bookings with houseboat operators often offer better value than large booking platforms. Cochin International Airport is the nearest airport, and a two to three-night houseboat journey fits well into most itineraries.

Rann of Kutch, Gujarat:

The Rann of Kutch comes alive in winter, when temperatures settle between 25 and 28°C. The vast salt desert absorbs sunlight during the day, making winter the only comfortable time to visit this region.

Under the winter sun, the white landscape sparkles, creating surreal views that are perfect for photography. The Rann Utsav adds colour through cultural performances, crafts, and local food. Visitors walk across the salt flats, explore Bhuj and nearby handicraft villages, enjoy camel rides, and even stargaze at night.

Accommodation during Rann Utsav is in high demand, especially the tented stays, so booking months in advance is recommended. Bhuj Airport is the closest, and a three-night stay allows enough time to experience the region properly.

Pondicherry:

Pondicherry enjoys winter temperatures between 23 and 30°C, with a tropical coastal setting that keeps the air warm but manageable. Gentle sea breezes make it comfortable for walking, café hopping, and beach visits.

The town’s French Quarter stands out with pastel buildings, quiet streets, and a relaxed pace. Winter is perfect for exploring Paradise and Serenity beaches, visiting Auroville, and spending time at street cafés and bakeries. Evening walks along Promenade Beach are especially pleasant in this season.

Chennai Airport is the nearest major airport, and the drive to Pondicherry takes about three hours. Renting a scooter makes it easier to explore the town at a slow pace. A three to four-day stay works well.

Hampi, Karnataka:

Hampi’s dry Deccan Plateau climate keeps winter temperatures between 24 and 28°C during the day. This makes sightseeing far more comfortable compared to the intense summer heat.

The landscape of massive boulders, ancient temples, and ruins looks striking under winter sunlight. Visitors explore sites like Virupaksha Temple and Vittala Temple, cycle through the ruins, or ride scooters along the river. Matanga Hill is popular for sunrise views, while riverside cafés offer relaxed evenings.

Staying across the river in Virupapur Gaddi is a favourite choice for those who enjoy a quieter atmosphere. Hubli and Bengaluru airports both serve as access points. Two to three days is usually sufficient for Hampi.

Mandarmani, West Bengal:

Mandarmani offers a peaceful winter beach escape with temperatures between 26 and 28°C. Bay of Bengal winds keep the air warm and breezy, making it ideal for travellers who prefer calm over crowds.

The long, driveable beach invites slow walks, while seafood meals remain a highlight. Some travellers take short trips to nearby Digha, but many prefer staying put and enjoying Mandarmani’s relaxed rhythm. Weekdays are noticeably quieter than weekends due to local tourism.

Kolkata Airport is the nearest major airport. Two to three nights are enough for a refreshing break.

Varkala, Kerala:

Varkala stands out because of its dramatic cliffs rising above the Arabian Sea. Winter temperatures hover around 28°C, keeping days warm and breezy.

The cliff-top path is lined with cafés, yoga centres, and small shops, making it ideal for slow exploration. Visitors spend time at the beach below the cliffs, join yoga sessions, try Ayurvedic treatments, and enjoy fresh seafood with sea views.

Late February and early March are particularly good for those seeking warm weather without peak-season crowds. Trivandrum Airport is the closest, and a stay of three to four days feels just right.

Kanyakumari, Tamil Nadu:

At India’s southernmost tip, Kanyakumari enjoys winter temperatures between 27 and 29°C. Its unique location, where three seas meet, keeps the climate warm and the skies relatively clear during winter.

One of its biggest draws is the ability to witness both sunrise and sunset from nearly the same point. Visitors explore the Vivekananda Rock Memorial, Thiruvalluvar Statue, Kanyakumari Temple, and coastal viewpoints. Reaching a day early improves your chances of securing a good sunrise spot.

Trivandrum is the nearest airport, and two to three days are sufficient to experience the town and its surroundings.
