In a strategic move, Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) is ensuring the completion of all necessary procedures for the implementation of the Maratha reservation before initiating the Ph.D. admission process.

The state government’s decision to allocate 10% reservation to the Maratha community, effective from February 26, has prompted the university to take proactive steps to incorporate the reservation in the upcoming admissions.

As the university readies itself for the Ph.D. admission cycle, certain considerations are being taken into account. With various pre-admission examinations, including the UPSC examination, scheduled for April, the Ph.D. pre-admission examination at SPPU is planned for May this year.

Prospective PhD candidates from both Maharashtra and outside the state are eagerly awaiting the commencement of the admission process. However, the university has clarified that the initiation of PhD admissions will be contingent upon the completion of internal processes related to available seats at guidance and research centers and the successful implementation of the 10% reservation for Maratha students.

The challenge extends to scheduling the PhD pre-admission examination, considering the limited availability of examination centers for online examinations in April. Additionally, with the Lok Sabha election schedule announced, the university must ensure that examinations do not coincide with polling days, making the situation clearer in the coming week.

Professor Parag Kalkar, SPPU Pro Vice-Chancellor, affirmed the university’s commitment to releasing a circular outlining the necessary procedures soon. He also acknowledged the significance of accommodating the Maratha reservation in the admission process, especially given the competitive nature of PhD admissions.

In response to the state government’s decision to provide 10% reservation for the entire Maratha community, urgent steps are being taken to implement the reservation in the admission process. While adjustments are being made to facilitate this, officials note that the PhD pre-admission test (PET) is likely to be held a week later than initially scheduled, possibly in the first week of May.

As the university navigates the intricacies of aligning PET dates with election schedules and ensures the effective incorporation of Maratha reservation, prospective PhD candidates are advised to stay tuned for further updates on the admission process.
