Pune: The state government has recently given in-principle approval to the improvement plan prepared by the Pune Metropolitan Area Development Authority (PMRDA) for making Indrayani River pollution free.

Speaking to Pune Pulse, Ramdas Jagtap, Deputy Collector, PMRDA said, “The way has been cleared to send the detailed project plan (DPR) to the central government for final approval. Meanwhile, 18 Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) have been proposed on the banks of the Indrayani river as part of this project. Once we get the approval, other details such as budgeting etc will be finalized. The work will begin after that.”

Jagtap further said that if the project plan is approved by the central government, the central government will provide 50 per cent of the funds, while the state government will provide 50 per cent of the funds. Under this project, various sub-projects have been proposed to prevent pollution of the river within a distance of 103 km. Among them,  a stretch of 17 to 18 km Indrayani river flows beside the area that comes under jurisdiction of Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC). The work of the project there will be done by the PCMC.

As per information, water from industrial companies as well as sewage is discharged into the Indrayani river without processing. Emphasis will be placed on preventing it. This will help in preventing the pollution. The river flows through the boundaries of three municipalities and some gram panchayats. Pollution is also added due to the siltation of sand from the river bed, lack of sufficient running water etc. Hence, along with making the river pollution free, the banks of the river will be beautified and a ghat will be constructed for the devotees. Therefore, this area will develop as a tourist destination.
