Love is in the air and rose prices are rising as Valentine’s Day is here! A bright spot exists in the midst of financial worries, despite the traditional token of love’s exorbitant price.

Two weeks ago, a single rose could be bought for a reasonable Rs. 10–15, but as the romantic holiday approaches, the cost has increased to approximately Rs. 50–60. Although this may appear to be a hardship for young people on a tight budget who want to surprise their significant others on Valentine’s Day, it also represents a thriving economy.

One local flower vendor expressed his opinion, saying that now is the time to prosper, in conversations with other flower vendors. Even with the same supply, they can command higher prices during festive seasons like Valentine’s Day because of the surge in demand. It’s evidence of small businesses’ tenacity and flexibility in satisfying customer demands during periods of high demand.

Not only are roses in high demand, but popular flowers like dandelions and sunflowers are also flying off the shelves, with the scarcity intensifying in the evening. Vendors are working nonstop to make sure that every romantic gesture is matched with the ideal bloom, despite the difficulties in meeting demand.

Speaking with a Symbiosis College couple, they shared their opinions on Valentine’s Day, saying that although it’s a special day for couples to celebrate their union, it can also make young people feel pressured. They stressed that some people may find it burdensome to expect to go on a date on this specific day. They also mentioned the difficulties in buying expensive gifts, stressing that the real value of a gift is its sentimental value rather than its purchase price. The couple also brought attention to Pune’s local society’s unwelcoming attitude toward couples. They talked about seeing critical glances and obtrusive remarks, which frequently lead to elderly city dwellers acting in an unsupportive manner.

As its Valentine’s Day today,  let’s keep in mind that romance and love have no boundaries and can foster resilience in the face of hardship and economic vitality.
