Mumbai, March 23: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has filed closure reports in two cases related to the death of Bollywood actor Sushant Singh Rajput, concluding that no foul play was involved. The agency has stated that there is no evidence to support allegations of abetment to suicide or financial fraud.

Case Background

Sushant Singh Rajput, 34, was found dead at his Mumbai residence on June 14, 2020. The initial investigation by the Mumbai Police ruled it as a suicide, with the postmortem confirming asphyxia due to hanging. However, the case triggered widespread media scrutiny and conspiracy theories, prompting demands for a CBI probe.

Rajput’s father, KK Singh, filed an FIR in Patna, accusing actress Rhea Chakraborty—his son’s girlfriend—of abetment to suicide and misappropriation of ₹15 crore from his accounts. Chakraborty denied all allegations and later faced arrest in a separate drug-related case linked to Rajput’s death.

CBI Findings and Closure Report

After a detailed investigation, the CBI has found no evidence of foul play. The agency relied on forensic reports, crime scene analysis, expert opinions, and witness statements to conclude that Rajput died by suicide and that no one instigated him.

The investigation also found no material evidence to support claims of financial fraud against Chakraborty. Furthermore, a counter-FIR she filed against Rajput’s sister, Priyanka Singh, and a Delhi-based doctor—accusing them of illegally prescribing medication—was also dismissed due to lack of substantial evidence.

Reactions and Political Controversy

Rhea Chakraborty’s lawyer expressed relief at the closure, stating, “We are grateful to the CBI for thoroughly investigating every aspect and closing the case.” He also highlighted that Chakraborty had to endure a difficult period, including 27 days in judicial custody.

Meanwhile, the Maharashtra Congress has criticized the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), alleging that the ruling party used Rajput’s death for political gains. Congress leaders claim the closure report has exposed what they describe as BJP’s “dirty politics” in targeting the then-Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government.

Next Steps

The closure reports will now be reviewed by the court, which will decide whether to accept them or order further investigation.
