Techies rant against stagnant salaries at TCS, Tech Mahindra: ‘Same Since 2007’
Viral post by Shashank Rustagi ignites debate on stagnant salaries in India’s IT industry, highlighting lack of wage growth at TCS and Tech Mahindra.
A post criticizing stagnant salaries at Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), one of India’s top IT companies, has gone viral with over a million views. The post by Shashank Rustagi highlights how, despite rising expenses, salaries at TCS have not kept pace with inflation. Rustagi pointed out that TCS still offers the same compensation of ₹21,000 per month as it did five years ago.
My TCS salary was 21K

My expenses were 30K
This was back in 2019
The worst part is they still offer the same package now 🙂
The viral post has resonated with many techies, who have shared similar experiences of stagnant wages not just at TCS but also at other leading IT firms like Tech Mahindra. Many recalled being offered the same salary as far back as 2008, with TCS bearing the brunt of the backlash.
Rustagi’s take on Indian IT salaries has sparked a spirited debate on X (formerly Twitter), amassing over 1.1 million views.
Users have expressed mixed reactions, with some labeling the situation as corporate exploitation and others considering it an inevitable part of life.
My first ever “offer” was from TCS from an off-campus drive. They were offering 21K all the way back in 2013 as well,” wrote X user Jatin.
X user Bhavan said TCS offered him the same salary in 2011. “Surprising to see they didn’t change the entry package much,” he wrote.
“My TCS salary in 2008 was 21k too,” wrote X user Pooja.
This debate has brought attention to the broader issue of wage stagnation in the Indian IT sector, calling for a re-evaluation of compensation structures to better reflect the rising cost of living and inflation rates.
Did you and 100s of others take the job? The market doesn’t care what your expenses are. It pays what is the lowest they’re able to fill the position at reliably. There are enough upwardly mobile lower middle class who will happily take that job,” one person said.
Several X users said that ₹21,000 would have gone a lot further in the 2000s and IT firms need to increase base pay.
