Ten Years On: Landslide Threat Reemerges Near Malin Gaon Amid Heavy Rains In Pune
Pune has been hit by heavy rainfall recently, prompting concerns of potential landslides in the region. The village of Pasarwadi, near Malin Gaon, is particularly at risk as significant cracks have appeared in the hillside, worsened by the ongoing intense rain.
Residents, including five to six families living precariously on the hillside, are living in constant fear due to the unstable conditions and delayed resettlement efforts.
The situation is compounded by the release of water from dams in Pune city, adding to the already severe weather conditions. The local population is anxiously awaiting resettlement as the heavy rainfall continues to impact the area.
In 2014, a similar disaster struck Malin Gaon, a tribal village in Ambegaon taluka, about 75 to 80 kilometers from Pune. On July 30, 2014, a massive landslide triggered by heavy rains buried the entire village, leaving over 44 homes and their occupants trapped under debris.
Rescue operations that followed recovered 151 bodies, and the event was declared a national disaster, leading to resettlement efforts for the survivors.
Now, ten years later, the threat of landslides has resurfaced in neighboring villages. The meteorological department has issued a red alert for Pune and Satara districts due to the forecast of extremely heavy rainfall over the next four days, especially in the ghat and mountainous areas.
