Three-Day School Holiday in Maharashtra Due to Elections? Education Department Issues Guidelines
Pune: With the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly Elections set for 20th November, the Maharashtra Education Department has issued guidance to potentially close schools on 18th, 19th, and 20th November. This measure aims to accommodate teachers’ election-related duties, as well as the use of school premises as polling stations.
The circular, issued by Tushar Mahajan, Deputy Secretary of the School Education Department, directs the Education Commissioner to advise school principals to suspend classes where teachers’ election responsibilities may disrupt regular schedules. This directive follows a recommendation from the Education Commissionerate to declare holidays for these three days to ensure smooth election operations.
Many teachers across the state are assigned to election duties, impacting their availability for regular teaching. Additionally, schools designated as polling stations will be prepared in advance, limiting their ability to function normally.
Former headmaster Mahendra Ganpule supported the decision, noting that teachers’ election assignments would interfere with academic activities. He emphasized the need for flexibility, advising that each school and local authority assess their unique circumstances before granting leave uniformly.
