TMKOC's Gurucharan Singh Makes Startling Revelation: 'Had No Plans of Coming Back'
The actor reveals he went on a spiritual journey and never intended to return.
Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah fame Gurucharan Singh has opened up about his disappearance for the first time. In a recent interview, Singh revealed that he went on a spiritual journey in April this year and had no plans of coming back. The actor further clarified that his disappearance wasn’t a publicity stunt and shared that he returned home only because ‘God gave me a sign’.
Gurucharan Singh, who played the popular character Roshan Singh Sodhi on the show, explained his sudden disappearance, saying, “I have always been spiritual because of my parents and at this point in life when I was feeling low, I turned towards God. I went on a spiritual journey and had no plans of coming back. But God gave me a sign and that made me return home.”
Addressing rumors about his disappearance being a publicity stunt, Singh stated, “Many people think I planned my disappearance for publicity, but that’s not true. If I wanted publicity, I could have given interviews to talk about the pending dues for my work in Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah. I could have used social media to do that, but I didn’t. Even after coming back home, I didn’t give any interviews, but now I am speaking up because I want to clarify certain things that people are saying about me.”
Gurucharan Singh went missing on April 22 this year but returned home in New Delhi after 26 days. Singh was interrogated by Delhi Police officials following which it was discovered that he had left home to be on a religious journey. Police officials had said that Gurucharan visited Gurudwaras in Amritsar and Ludhiana ever since he was reported “missing” but he later realized that he should return home.
Gurucharan Singh played the role of Roshan Singh Sodhi — a fun-loving man who is always in party mode and never shies away from expressing love for his wife. He was one of the popular characters on the show and also a founding cast member. Gurcharan, however, left the show in 2013 only to return next year due to public demand. After his exit in 2020, he was replaced by actor Balwinder Singh Suri.
In a video shared on Instagram, a paparazzo was heard asking Gurucharan Singh if the Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah production team cleared his payment dues. Gurucharan replied, “Haan ji, sabka kar diye almost. Almost. Kuch ka mujhe nahi pata hai, woh mujhe puchna padega (Yes, they have cleared almost everyone’s payment. I don’t know about some, that I’ll have to ask).” When asked if he would be back on the show, Gurucharan replied, “God knows. Rab jane. Mujhe kuch nahi pata hain. Jayse hi pata chalega, aapko bataunga (God knows, I don’t know anything. As soon as I get to know, I will tell you guys).”
Soon after he returned to his residence in the national capital, the actor was questioned by Delhi Police and his statement recorded before a local court. The actor deposed that he left home for a spiritual journey, the police informed. In April, Gurucharan’s father filed a complaint with Delhi Police, detailing his son’s sudden disappearance since his departure for Mumbai. According to his father’s statement, Gurucharan, who was visiting his parents in Delhi, was expected to return to Mumbai. But he never reached the city.
