In a distressing incident on January 2, a one-and-a-half-year-old girl faced a harrowing experience as she was allegedly attacked by a pit bull outside her house in C Block of Burari, north Delhi. The child, accompanied by her grandfather for a walk, encountered the aggressive dog, resulting in severe injuries.

The grandfather, Jageshwar Mehta, narrated the horrifying incident, stating, “The dog held my child’s leg with its jaw, and it took us some time to release her from its clutches. My granddaughter has received multiple injuries on her body. Her right leg has three fractures and multiple stitches.” The toddler had to undergo a two-week-long treatment at Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital.

Despite approaching the police three times, Mehta expressed frustration over the lack of action against the dog owner. The same dog had reportedly attacked a neighbor previously. Police are currently verifying the details before registering a case under the relevant sections.

This incident echoes a similar case, where a seven-year-old girl was allegedly attacked by a neighbor’s American Bully dog in Rohini’s Sector-25 area, resulting in 15 injuries. Protests against the menace of aggressive dogs ensued in the locality, emphasizing the need for preventive measures.

Demanding the removal of the pit bull from the area, the toddler’s family draws attention to the fact that keeping pit bulls as pets is prohibited in India due to their classification as a “dangerous” breed. The central government, in December last year, assured the Delhi High Court of a decision within three months regarding the prohibition of licenses for keeping such breeds as pets. As authorities investigate the recent incident, concerns about dog attacks and the safety of residents in these areas are brought to the forefront.
