Pune: The traffic awareness week (April 18-23) is underway at Radha chowk, Baner. Commuters would have noticed ‘traffic wardens’ ensuring the smooth flow of traffic. This initiative, spearheaded by Amol Balwadkar, Baner-Balewadi corporator, has met with great response from the public.

“Heavy traffic congestion at the Radha and Saikar chowk is one of the biggest issues in Baner locality. After speaking to many residents in the societies, I discussed the issue with Rahul Shrirame, Deputy Commissioner of Police, traffic and decided to deploy 10-15 wardens on roads during the traffic awareness week,” said Balwadkar.

The initiative has had the complete support from the Pune traffic police. Traffic wardens have been posted at Sarkar Chowk, Mamta Chowk, Nanaware chowk and Ganpati Chowk.

“Radha chowk gets congested with two-wheelers, trucks and PMPML buses and so, I have to plan my travel accordingly. We hardly see traffic police at that place. Such initiatives should become a regular affair atleast during the peak hours from 8 am to 11 am and from 6 pm to 9 pm,” said Milind Salunkhe, a resident of Pan Card Club road.

Talking about the traffic issue, Balwadkar said that various activities will be taken for the smooth and safe travel of the commuters. “A traffic warden will be deployed permanently at the important junctions of Baner-Balewadi for the benefit of citizens,” said Balwadkar.
