Two IISER Pune Professors Named Fellows of Indian National Science Academy
Professors Anjan Banerjee and Pinaki Talukdar from the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) Pune have been selected as fellows of the prestigious Indian National Science Academy (INSA) in New Delhi. The fellowship, starting in January 2025, recognizes their outstanding contributions to scientific knowledge and technological advancements. They are among 63 faculty members from various Indian science institutions honored by INSA this year.
Established in 1935, INSA is dedicated to promoting the growth of science in India and applying scientific research for the nation’s benefit. The fellowship is awarded to scientists whose work significantly advances their respective fields.
Professor Banerjee, a plant biologist in IISER Pune’s biology department, focuses on understanding the complex mechanisms of plant growth and development, particularly through long-distance macromolecular signaling. His team employs advanced molecular techniques, bioinformatics, transcriptomics, and imaging technologies to study plant signaling processes.
Professor Talukdar, from IISER Pune’s chemistry department, leads pioneering research in artificial ion transporters, which are designed to induce programmed cell death in cancer cells by disrupting ion balance. His expertise lies in organic chemistry and the chemical biology of supramolecular systems. He has also developed ion transporters that can be activated by specific stimuli, enabling precise cancer cell targeting.
The recognition of these two professors highlights IISER Pune’s dedication to advancing scientific research and innovation, strengthening India’s scientific community on the global stage.
