The Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal (PMPML) has announced plans to install solar panels at its bus depots in an effort to generate clean energy and reduce its carbon footprint.

The move is part of PMPML’s ongoing efforts to promote sustainability and decrease dependence on fossil fuels. In the first phase, the buildings of Deccan Gymkhana and Kothrud Depot will be powered and PMPML has entered into a 25-year contract with the company to install solar panels.

PMPML currently has 458 e-buses and aims to increase this up to 1500 in the coming years. PMPML has decided to generate solar energy at various depots and bus stations to reduce the cost of the increasing number of ‘e-buses’ and the electricity required for it.

This initiative is expected to have a positive impact on the environment by reducing emissions and promoting the use of renewable energy sources.
The installation of the solar panels is set to begin in the coming months and is expected to be completed by the end of the year.

Speaking about the same, Omprakash Bakoria, director, PMPML said,”It will be beneficial for all the depots to generate electricity from solar panels. In the first phase, in Kothrud and Deccan depots, solar panels will be installed.”

Dattatray Zende, chief traffic manager, PMPML said that electricity cost of PMPML will be reduced after the installation of solar panels and it will be helpful for e-buses, as well.
