Udit Narayan’s first wife accuses him of non-consensual uterus surgery, seeks justice
Veteran playback singer Udit Narayan has once again found himself at the centre of controversy after his first wife, Ranjana Jha, lodged a serious complaint in Bihar alleging that her uterus was surgically removed without her consent nearly three decades ago. Ranjana, 61, approached the Women’s Police Station in Supaul district, north Bihar, on February 10, 2026. Accompanied by her lawyer, Karunakant Jha, she submitted a written complaint detailing allegations that date back to the 1990s.
According to her statement, she married Udit Narayan on December 7, 1984, following Hindu rituals. She claims that after their marriage, the singer moved to Mumbai in 1985 to pursue a career in Bollywood and gradually distanced himself from her.
The station in-charge, Anju Tiwari, confirmed to the media that the matter is under investigation. She noted that the incidents mentioned in the complaint are around 30 years old and that an FIR will be registered based on findings from the inquiry.
One of the most serious accusations in the complaint relates to a medical procedure in 1996. Ranjana alleges that Udit Narayan and his brothers, Sanjay Kumar Jha and Lalit Narayan Jha, took her to a large private hospital in Delhi under the pretext of treatment. There, she claims, her uterus was removed without her knowledge or consent.
She further stated that she only learned about the surgery years later during a separate medical consultation. According to her lawyer, doctors informed her during treatment that her uterus had already been removed, leaving her shocked and distressed.
Ranjana also claimed that Udit’s second wife, Deepa Narayan, was present at the hospital during the alleged procedure.
Ranjana said she later discovered through media reports that Udit had married Deepa in Mumbai and had started a new family. The couple’s son, singer Aditya Narayan, is now a well-known face in the entertainment industry.
Each time she questioned him about the second marriage, Ranjana alleged that Udit misled her rather than offering clarity. The singer had risen to nationwide fame after delivering chart-topping songs in Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak, directed by Mansoor Khan and starring Aamir Khan and Juhi Chawla. His career soared after the film’s success in 1988.
Ranjana further claimed that in 2006 she was verbally abused and denied entry into Udit’s Mumbai residence. She said she faced similar humiliation when she visited her in-laws’ home in Nepal.
Since then, she has been living at her parental home in Supaul. She stated that she had previously approached the Family Court in Supaul and the Women’s Commission. During legal proceedings, she alleged, Udit accepted in writing that she is his legally wedded wife and even submitted a compromise petition promising maintenance. However, she claims that he failed to fulfill those commitments and eventually stopped providing financial support.
“I demand the respect that should be given to a wife,” Ranjana reportedly said. “He has acknowledged that I am his first wife, but he does not fulfill his responsibilities.”
She added that she has been unwell in recent times and needs his support, which she says has not been forthcoming.
Her lawyer alleged that Ranjana’s life was severely impacted by the events of 1996 and that she had been misled for years. He claimed that the revelation about the uterus removal pushed her to finally seek criminal action. This development comes months after Udit Narayan faced online criticism for kissing female audience members during a concert, drawing widespread backlash on social media.
Meanwhile, discussions about financial struggles in the film industry also resurfaced recently, including reports about actor Rajpal Yadav and his debt issues, though unrelated to the current case.
With the complaint now under investigation, the Women’s Police Station in Supaul will determine whether an FIR will be formally registered. The case has reignited public scrutiny around the singer’s personal life and past relationships. For Ranjana, however, the matter goes beyond headlines. After years of legal battles and personal turmoil, she says she is simply seeking dignity, accountability, and long-overdue justice.
