Pune – The process of development revolves around urbanisation, which is driven by four key factors: education, healthcare, employment, and entertainment. These are the elements that attract people to cities. However, failure to formulate a proper city development policy considering these aspects has led to urban challenges, stated Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.

Speaking at a workshop organized by the Urban Development Department at Yashada for municipal commissioners and municipal council chief officers across the state, Fadnavis said that if municipal corporations and councils plan to provide better civic amenities, the state government will fully support them. “These cities are the growth centres of development,” he added.

Deputy CM and Urban Development Minister Eknath Shinde, Minister of State for Urban Development Madhuri Misal, Additional Chief Secretary Asimkumar Gupta, and Principal Secretary Dr. K.H. Govindraj were present at the event.

Fadnavis highlighted that Maharashtra has the second-highest urban population in India, with 6 crore people residing in 450 cities. Enhancing the beauty and functionality of these cities could significantly improve the lives of 50% of the state’s population. He emphasized the need to focus on basic healthcare infrastructure in urban areas and to implement central and state schemes effectively.

He urged regular review and timely completion of water supply and sewage management projects. He also introduced a new 150-day program focusing on e-governance and human resource development.

Eknath Shinde noted that such workshops are essential for understanding local governance challenges and ensuring balanced development across cities.
