CCTV footage shows unprovoked attack in gated colony; victim undergoes surgery, police complaint filed against dog owner

A routine morning walk turned into a horrifying ordeal for a 31-year-old software engineer in Bengaluru after she was brutally attacked by her neighbour’s pet dog in a residential area of the city. The incident, which took place in a gated colony in HSR Layout, has triggered widespread concern over pet safety norms and owner responsibility.

The attack occurred on January 26 at around 6.54 am in Teachers’ Colony when the woman stepped out for her daily walk. CCTV footage from the area shows the pet dog suddenly lunging at her without any visible provocation. The animal is seen repeatedly attacking the woman as she struggles to protect herself and cries for help.

The video further shows a man rushing to intervene after noticing the attack. As he tried to pull the dog away from the victim, the animal turned aggressive towards him as well, forcing him to grab the dog by the neck to restrain it. During this struggle, the woman managed to get back on her feet, run indoors, and shut the gate behind her. Bystanders then stepped in to help control the dog.

The woman sustained severe injuries to her face, hands, and legs. She suffered deep bite wounds and lacerations, requiring more than 50 stitches. She was rushed to hospital for treatment and is currently reported to be in stable condition. However, doctors have indicated that she will need time to recover physically and emotionally from the trauma.

Following the incident, the victim’s husband filed a complaint at the HSR Layout Police Station, accusing the dog owner of negligence. According to the complaint, the dog was allegedly left unleashed despite being known as aggressive, posing a serious risk to residents in the area. The police have taken cognisance of the matter and are examining the circumstances under which the dog was allowed to roam freely within the residential colony.

The incident has reignited debate around enforcement of pet ownership rules in urban housing societies. Residents have raised concerns about the lack of strict monitoring, especially in gated communities where people often assume a basic level of safety. Many have called for mandatory leashing, proper training of pets, and accountability measures for owners whose animals pose a danger to others.

The CCTV footage of the attack has since gone viral on social media, drawing strong reactions from the public. While many expressed sympathy for the victim, others stressed the importance of balancing pet welfare with public safety. The case is likely to influence discussions around clearer rules and stricter enforcement to prevent similar incidents in residential areas.

As investigations continue, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the responsibility that comes with pet ownership and the need for preventive measures to ensure the safety of all residents.
