Pune: Pune Municipal Corporation will provide water on alternate days to all parts of the cities from July 4 and the situation will be reviewed on 11th.

“Water in all four dams is less, as of now. So, water will be provided on alternate days from July 4 to July 11. The situation will be assessed again on 11th and further decision will be taken,” said Aniruddha Pawaskar, head of PMC water department.

The decision was taken after discussion with the irrigation department and the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), Pune.

The total storage in the four dams – Khadakwasla, Temghar, Warasagaon and Panshet – is below 3 TMC. Last year during the same time, the four dams had around 8 TMC water.

“The timing of water supply will remain the same, only the supply will be on alternate days. The detailed timetable has been uploaded on the PMC website,” added Pawaskar.

For the last 3-4 years, Pune has been receiving good pre-monsoon showers in May which had increased the water level in the dams and there was no requirement for water rationing. However, this year is different as the city has hardly received any rains in the months of May and June.

“The rainfall is not a classical one this year and that is the reason Pune has received less rainfall. One more reason is as this time no system has been formed in the Bay of Bengal or Arabian sea that’s why monsoon progress is slower in Maharashtra,” said Anupam Kashyapi, head of weather forecasting department IMD, Pune.
