Weak Mobile Network Inside Mumbai-Pune Connecting Link Tunnels Frustrates Commuters During Travel
Mumbai/Pune, May 16: The recently opened Mumbai-Pune Connecting Link has been widely appreciated for easing traffic congestion and reducing travel time between the two cities. But the commuters are expressing concern over weak mobile network connectivity inside the tunnels, warning that the issue could pose serious risks during emergencies.
On May 1, the missing link project was inaugurated by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis along with Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Sunetra Ajit Pawar. Constructed by Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation, the project features two tunnels, including one considered among the widest in the world, along with two cable-stayed bridges. It shortens the Mumbai- Pune journey by nearly 6 kilometres and reduces travel time by approximately 20 to 25 minutes, while helping commuters avoid the accident-prone Khandala-Lonavla ghat stretch.

Many motorists have raised concerns about their experience with weak or completely unavailable mobile signals inside the tunnels. Commuters say the lack of connectivity could become a major concern during situations such as accidents, vehicle breakdowns or medical emergencies, where immediate communication is important.
Despite the improved travel facilities, several travellers reported that mobile networks disappeared entirely for nearly 10 to 12 minutes while passing through certain tunnel sections.
A commuter said, “Uninterrupted mobile service is essential in emergencies, especially when motorists may need to contact control rooms or emergency services.” He claimed there was no network coverage for almost 10 to 12 minutes during his journey through the tunnel and urged MSRDC officials to resolve the issue at the earliest.
Along with it, a Motorist praised the project for saving both time and fuel but said the issue of poor connectivity inside the tunnels needs urgent attention from authorities.
Since its inauguration, the Mumbai-Pune Connecting Link has drawn praise as a major infrastructure milestone and an engineering achievement. However, commuters are now calling on authorities and telecom providers to improve network coverage across the tunnel network to ensure safer and more reliable travel.
